The code in ver 2.x is from 1998 and is lacking in functionality and
stability. But I also know that people is using this code and are very
happy with it. But this wont help steve in his goal in getting his NT
workstations authenticated by using LDAP to store authentication
information. This is because the ldap code in the 2.x branch is totally
broken. But unfortunately the LDAP code in the samba_TNG branch is also
broken at the moment (read the ldap-smb-howto).

If i should speak of my experience then will I recommend the version of
samba2.1prealpha from October 15. taken just before 2.1pre turned into
samba_tng. How to set this up and get this working is described in the
ldap-smb-howto. I have had this version up and running since just before
easter and I have almost no errors in the log files (most of the the
errors is human errors because of errors in the user information in the
LDAP directory). The load on the machine running samba is also
drastically reduced as I can see it:
http://www.student.uit.no/system/stats/mrtg/data/picknose-load.html
The version of samba we used before this was ver 2.1pre from September
31. It used a flat file smbpasswd with 1300-1500 users. At least I'm
happy for not having over 26 in load and smbd processes taking 99
percentage of the cpu.

I don't understand, samba_TNG as far as I understand have the ability to
be a backup domain controller (BDC). Read the Samba_TNG faq:
http://www.kneschke.de/projekte/samba_tng/ for more info.
