Ok, I'm not quite sure what I should use for my bind dn. I tried:

ldapsearch -W -D "cn=adam,dc=mdah,dc=state,dc=ms,dc=us"
Enter LDAP Password:
SASL/DIGEST-MD5 authentication started
ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: Internal (implementation specific) error
(80)
        additional info: SASL(-13): user not found: no secret in database


As I noted, you need to have -x as part of the options to do a simple bind.
