There might not be any requirement but it's handy at times. For
example, if you want to write a GUI frontend to add data to an LDAP
server that frontend either has to know about the schemas in the
directory server or it might simply ask the LDAP server for it's
available schemas. Plus, it's easy to add new objectclasses to the
directory that way as well.
I would very much like this feature to be included in OpenLDAP. It
makes life easier on most of us (not necessarily the developers,
though :)
