Aside from the other responses, I will note that BDB 4.4 is extremely new, and not highly tested with OpenLDAP yet (I've done some minimal testing). Early indicators were slower writes times compared to 4.2 or 4.3,

I'd happily accept slower writes if this makes BDB more stable and increases data integrity.

I had some crashes with slapd during 2.3.11 and 2.3.12 with BDB 4.3.29
but unfortunately I can't narrow down the problem to file an issue to
ITS. Not sure about 2.3.13 at the moment.

Have you tried with BDB 4.2.52+patches? That has been an extremely stable and solid release for me.

but potentially faster read times.

What does "potentially faster" mean? Did you already observe higher read performance but didn't measure it exactly or are there some changes in BDB 4.4 which theoretically should result in higher read performance?

The one read test for 4.4 I performed came in faster than 4.2 or 4.3. 4.2 has always been faster than 4.3 in my tests, for both reads and writes. And stable. ;)
