Have you tried with BDB 4.2.52+patches?  That has been an extremely stable 
and solid release for me.

The one read test for 4.4 I performed came in faster than 4.2 or 4.3.  4.2 
has always been faster than 4.3 in my tests, for both reads and writes. And 
stable. ;)
