I'd happily accept slower writes if this makes BDB more stable and
increases data integrity.
I had some crashes with slapd during 2.3.11 and 2.3.12 with BDB 4.3.29
but unfortunately I can't narrow down the problem to file an issue to
ITS. Not sure about 2.3.13 at the moment.

What does "potentially faster" mean? Did you already observe higher read
performance but didn't measure it exactly or are there some changes in
BDB 4.4 which theoretically should result in higher read performance?
