Well, since this post, I found an obscure reference to the syntax for ldbmtest, and with that syntax (everthing has to be caps) I can do a search on any attribute in there and it is working perfectly. So there is an entry with this pair (my entry).

As for using ldif2ldbm, I was following the UMich admin guide. But it does seem to have created a database that is correct since ldbmtest works.
