PHP localhost problem...

Goodday all,

I've got the server up and running on the localhost, I can search and
add and whatnot via the command line ldapsearch, ldapadd and so forth. 
However, when I try the php command:

        $ds = ldap_connect("localhost");

I get the "Unable to connect to LDAP server error".  when I try:

        $ds = ldap_connect("ldap.bigfoot.com");

for instance, it works.  It seems to work with other ldap servers, just
not with the localhost.  Does anyone know what could be causing this?
