Note that OpenLDAP now has experimental backend that implements something
that is referenced as "third way" in the above FAQ (it is available as part
of development branch through CVS). It helps to use LDAP as access protocol
to existing relational database (with some limitations - see that FAQ, and
documentation on back-sql).
