passwd file using ldap (ITS#414)

Hello Sir.

Is it possible that the file passwd is substituted by ldap?

I heard any one can do this, using shard library, ldap serer  and changing
the nsswich.conf file.

What I want to do is 

  1. ldap server manages many userid in different hosts like passwd file
     Maybe, the ldap server is the central user id  server like NIS+

  2. When different hosts look up a user , they reference ldap server and
     get uid/gid/home path etc....
     The same user name has same uid/gid in different host.
 

 Is it possible?
