I am having trouble in adding user with dn having umlaut characters using ldapmodify tool,It is giving invalid syntax

what I need to do ?

please help

dn:uid=Röichard,ou=newUsers,dc=cricbox,dc=in

ldap_add: Invalid DN syntax (34)

additional info: invalid DN
