openldap client over ssl

Hi
I am new to openldap and ssl. I would like to use only the openldap client sdk.
What I want to do is use the openldap client sdk to develop some tools which could comunicate with ldap server over ssl channel. Do I still need openssl?
Maybe I should ask my question this way:

Openssl will need to be used to generate the certificate etc.
Does my application itself requre openssl libraries if it needs to support ssl?

I think the answer probably is yes.
