Maybe you haven't set the value for BASE in /etc/openldap/ldap.conf (or the 
relevant default configuration file for the OpenLDAP library).

You may wish to define all applicable options on the commandline to avoid this 
confusion, until you are sure you have configured the defaults correctly. 
E.g.:

ldapsearch -x -h localhost -b dc=mycompany,dc=com

(instead of 'ldapsearch -x')

Also, inspecting the logs on the LDAP server may be of value.
