Not necessarily wrong, but I generally suggest folks with
the "Quick Start Guide" in the OpenLDAP Admin Guide and then
build on that success.

I suspect your problem is that you are making assumptions
about the format of slapd.conf(5) that simply are not valid.
I suggest you read slapd.conf(5) with particular attention
to continuation lines, comments, and backslash escaping.
