no searchresults without wildcards

Hey list

I can't get any search results, when searching for the whole word.
e.g. as filter cn=samba or cn=*samba* doesn't give my any hits,
whereas filter cn=*amb* gives me my samba user ( 
cn=samba,ou=smbusers,...... )

Any hints how I can fix this ??
