First, make sure your Cyrus SASL software is properly
configured and tested.  Use the Cyrus SASL list to
work out how to do that (as well as details on how
to test your Cyrus SASL configuration).

By not asking the LDAP client to do proxy authorization.
That is, by not specifying a -X option to ldap*(1) tools.

Note that use of ldapwhoami(1) will help here as it will
tell you the results of the server's identity mapping.
