Just now somewhat out of my depth myself, but perhaps are
kerberos-realms casesensitiv and in your originalpost you write, that
the realm is called SHORTER.EDU. By omitting the realm in the
userpassword-attribute saslauthd checks against the defaultrealm for
your server, which is apperently SHORTER.EDU.
