Is the above (a) the searchFilter or (b) the searchBase?  If (a), then
make sure you have an employeeNumber with value
"1031275942,ou=somewhere,dc=example,dc=co,dc=za" somewhere in your
database; if (b), make sure the entry with DN
"employeeNumber=1031275942,ou=somewhere,dc=example,dc=co,dc=za" exists. 
You may also check that although the data exists, you have access to it. 
A useful means to check it is to look at the server logs at an appropriate
level.
