As far as a test server goes, ldap.openldap.org is generally

What's nice about ldap://www.nldap.com for testing LDAP clients is that you can get a directory container (sub tree) with write access authorized by your own account.

Maybe OpenLDAP's test server ldap://ldap.openldap.org could offer a similar service in the future?
