Also your version of OpenLDAP 2.2 is rather old and known to be buggy. 

I upgraded to 2.2.17 and also added the following:
checkpoint 500 300

My question now is, how do I know if it is working?

I'll note that you are saying to checkpoint every 300 minutes, which is once every 5 hours. I imagine you would probably prefer that to be a "5" which is every 5 minutes.
