RE: openldap tools starttls
I understand your situation, IIRC, starttls support was available since 2.1.X, but certain "man pages" I believe including early 2.2.X (2.2.13?) did not get published in "man ldap.conf".

Download I think 2.2.15 onwards, and u will get the proper "man ldap.conf" pages showing all the "TLS_..." directives.
Also read the very useful TLS HOWTO by Kent Soper.
