OK; this brings me one step further (although I'd tried that before). 
It still doesn't find anything, though:

huckepack:~> ldapsearch -x -h localhost -b dc=my-domain,dc=com Giesler
# extended LDIF
#
# LDAPv3
# base <dc=my-domain,dc=com> with scope sub
# filter: (objectclass=*)
# requesting: Giesler
#

# search result
search: 2
result: 0 Success

# numResponses: 1
