RE: referrals

That's of little help, unfortunately, since modify requests to a slave
result in a referral being returned from the frontend, so there's no
chance the overlay intercepts it.  The overlay is stacked between the
frontend and the backend, and, to be triggered, an operation needs to
result in backend invocation.  This will be possible when overlays at
global level will become available (soon, I hope; see ITS#3080).
