proxycache and rewrite rules

Hi,
the paper "The OpenLDAP Proxy Cache" by Apurva Kumar is referring to
specific rewrite rules for proxy cache. There is no reference to this
specific rewrite rules in any other documentation on proxycache
i.e. man slapd-meta(5) or admin guide. 
Are rewrite rules necessary with proxy caching at all? 
Not that applying rewrite rules solved my general problem of not
supplying output to answerable queries, yet. :-(
