It was very slow when I dropped to three characters, and then I watched it in debug mode to find out why (mode 1),  and saw that it wasn't using the indexes.

Hi,

What leads you to think it fails to use an index?
You mean it is slow, or are there other indications that it fails to use an 
index ???
