the problem is the sasl. If I rebuilt the SASL do I need to rebuild the openldap client? or will it just automatically pick the new one up accordingly?

You should first verify that the GSSAPI mechanism works on
that system using the provided Cyrus SASL tools. (Discussion
of how to use the Cyrus SASL tools is beyond the scope of this
list.)
