Or a large change in how 4.1 and 4.2 were installed on the local
system.

I suspect the change in linking is simply due to differences in
how Berkeley 4.1 v 4.2 were installed on the system.  In particular,
I suspect the later was installed with a .la file.

If a .la file is made available, OpenLDAP build environment
will make use of it.
