I've built and installed Berkeley DB 4.2, but still configure can't find the BDB backend

checking for Berkeley DB thread support... no
checking Berkeley DB version for BDB backend... no
configure: error: BDB: BerkeleyDB version incompatible

configure seems to find the Berkeley 4.2 lib ok now, but where is the BDB
backend?  if it can't find the backend, what is the error about version
incompatibility?  (not there == incompatible?)
