Ignorant question

Hi all,

When an openldap server is setup to do referrals, does it keep a local 
cache of the "referraled" information?  So, say a user authenticates 
against our openldap server via referral, then logs out.  But, then, at 
a later time logs back in, but the network connection between our ldap 
server and the target of referral is lost, can the user still authenticate?
