It is possible to use the SASL/K4 mechanism in place of kpasswd, I tested it here @ Stanford in earlier releases of OpenLDAP 2.1.x. However, clients who expect to use kpasswd cannot use SASL/K4 in place, as they are not compatible.

You might be thinking of kbind... which is quite different from kpasswd.
