getent passwd response truncated

[Reposting, since nobody has answered in a moth or so]

I have OpenLDAP 2.1.22, BerkeleyDB, nss_ldap 207 in a double Xeon 2.4GHz, 
1GB ECC Memory. Around 1k users in the directory, posixAccount objectclass 
for them.

Getent passwd truncates answers to around 400 users, though everything else 
seems to be ok. I tweaked ldap.conf a bit, to no avail.
Is this a known limitation? anything i might be missing?

Any comments/pointers/suggestions appreciated.
