Are you by any chance starting slapd as root when it works? RedHat's
"service ldap start" will start slapd as user ldap -- does user ldap
have the needed authority to read the database? How did you create the
database (slapadd as root by any chance???)? Did you remember to chown
the files and/or directories so that userid ldap can use them?
