SLAPI plugins for OpenLDAP 2.1.22

I am wanting to use SLAPI plugins for password validation and encryption for OpenLDAP 
2.1.22.  Could anyone point me in the right direction for some documentation?  Specifically,
I need information on the SLAPI plugin code itself, and in addition some information on how
to get OpenLDAP to use the plugins once they are written.
