ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server

Hi,

using pam_ldap-164 I get the error message 

pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server

To be sure that all config parameters from ldap.conf are correct used, a few
debugging lines in pam_ldap.c show these informations in syslog:

Jul 18 15:05:44 x sshd[9186]: pam_ldap: uri ldap://server.commerzbank.com
Jul 18 15:05:44 x sshd[9186]: pam_ldap: base o=commerzbank.com
Jul 18 15:05:44 x sshd[9186]: pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP
server
Jul 18 15:05:44 x sshd[9186]: pam_ldap: binddn
uid=ldapusr,type=user,cn=commerzbank.com
Jul 18 15:05:44 x sshd[9186]: pam_ldap: bindpw xxx

Just to dubble check ldap.conf, I did a successfull ldapsearch for the
requested user with simple bind and identical binddn and password. So I am
sure the partner side is working with simple bind and the requested
informations are available.

Has anyone an idea why API-call ldap_simple_bind in pam_ldap.c fails or I
could further investigate the error?
Is this simple_bind call different from simple_bind call in ldapsearch?

Here are some informations about the underlying system:

Linux SuSE 8.0
openldap2-client-2.1.4-70
