no validator for syntax 1.3.6.1.4.1.1466.115.121.1.3

Hi i am getting the following error when i try to ldapmodify
i have already defined cn=schema in the slapd.conf file, like this:

database        bdb
suffix          "cn=schema"
rootdn          "cn=root,cn=schema"

I am using open-ldap 2.1.22 (with BDB 4.1.25)

modifying entry "cn=schema"
ldapmodify: update failed: cn=schema
ldap_modify: Invalid syntax (21)
       additional info: attributetypes: no validator for syntax
1.3.6.1.4.1.1466.115.121.1.3

I've searched all around, and I can't for the life of me find an answer to 
this.  Anyone have any suggestions?
