consistency between the read and the modify

Hi,

Has anyboby try to implement something like a semaphore in his server, in
order to be able to protect the data between the read and and the modify ?
I read something interesting about that in :

and I 'd like to know if someone had tried that and if it works, or if
someone have an other solution to provide consistency?
