As per one of my previous emails, the cachesize directive in slapd.conf
has  no bearing on BDB.

Are you sure about this? The slapd-bdb(5) manpage says this is a valid directive for bdb:

       cachesize <integer>
              Specify the size in entries of the in-memory cache
maintained by               the BDB backend database instance.  The
default is 1000 entries.


Sorry, you are correct. I was thinking of the BDB cache size itself (which with LDBM can be set by dbcachesize).
