id: cannot find name for user ID

When I try to login as any user I get the message "id: cannot find name for
user ID", but I get to the user's home directory, though.
If I run ls -l,  I get the group name and the uidNumber instead of the
username.  It is being able to retrieve the group name but not the username.
"finger username" is working properly

I am running RHL 7.3 with

openldap-2.0.27-2.7.3
openldap-clients-2.0.27-2.7.3
php-ldap-4.1.2-7.3.6
nss_ldap-189-4
auth_ldap-1.6.0-4
