problem with openldap upto 2.1.16

Hi All,

We are experiencing a weird problem with openldap.

Sometimes when there are lots of requests slapd will
say "too many open files."

This happened yesterday when we upgraded our master 
server which took about 30 mins, we have 2 slave slapd's
and both of them fell over.

we use round robin DNS to distribute load to the master/slaves
but we took the master out of dns before we turned the
machine off.

Just to be sure, there shouldn't be a problem if the master is 
down should there? Clients just wont be able to change 
anything?
