I get the same with 2.1.8 and virtually the same kernel/OS as you, but
I've shoved the practical implementation of kerberos aside for the time
being, since my multi-homed notebook can't swallow it.

My only thought that could help, is that /var/log/messages
shows continual "unable to dlopen /usr/lib/sasl2/libkerberos4.so.2:
/usr/lib/sasl2/libkerberos4.so.2: undefined symbol: krb_err_txt" errors
from many IP-based services from which I'd never have expected them,
including slapd.
