'su' to ID fine but cannot 'login'

- I have installed OpenLDAP 2.1.8
- Installed the LDAP PAM
- I have migrate the NIS domain into the BDB and can use GQ to see all
- As 'root' I can 'su' to a non-local ID fine. Retrieves $HOME directory
and 'group' information find (from LDAP).

PROBLEM: if I try to 'login' as that same non-local user, I get the
following:

bash-2.05a$ login
login: trobbins
Password:
LDAP Password:

Session setup problem, abort.

- I also cannot change the password of the user. The command just
hangs after the confirmation of the new password. Although there
is alot of disk activity as it is trying to set the password (apparently)

bash-2.05a$ passwd
Changing password for user trobbins.
Enter login(LDAP) password:
New password:
Retype new password:

Any help would be appreciated
