Why do I have to be root to run ldapsearch

Im sure this is a configuration problem but I can't seem to spot it.
Whan doing ldapsearch I get the following error if I do it as a "user":
ldap_initialize( <DEFAULT> )
ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: No such object (32)
Y=The same search as "root" works fine. Any suggestions?
