Changing OID

I have a LDAP directory where I am using a custom schema. I am re-working
the schema and there is the possibilty that I will change the OID numbers
for certain attributes.  My question is what is the impact of this on an
existing directory.  Are the OIDs used to reference attributes in the
directory?
