FAQ for transition to 2.1.x?

Hi, all.  I've got bloody shins from trying to switch a developing LDAP
project from 1.2.x to 2.1.5.  Principal among my woes so far are schema
changes.  I've looked in vain for a statement along the lines of "Here are the
changes we've made, and here are links to why"

>From what I infer through my bruises, there were many attributes that were
operational, yet defined in the schema and available to be present in objects.
This is no longer legal, or more precisely the illegality of this practice is
now enforced.

If business processes have grown up around the availability of these
operational attributes, should we just add them to the local schema extensions
and soldier on?
