I'm using 4.1 just fine.  You're probably not finding the include or library 
files.

before running configure, do:

export LDFLAGS=-L/opt/BerkeleyDB/lib
export CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/BerkeleyDB/include

where /opt/BerkeleyDB was where you installed BerkeleyDB to
