For the general problem of online backups, I recommend migrating to the
latest back-bdb, which solves that problem. For the other problem, one
approach would be to check whether the replog file is non-empty on the
master, which says that slurpd hasn't picked up the most recent updates yet,
and check for an active connection from the master to the slave, which says
that an update is in progress.
