This looks like it could be an index corruption problem (I've posted a few
messages on this lately).
To test this non-destructively, comment out your mail indexes from your
slapd.conf, restart the server and try your search again. The search will
take longer, but if your searches start to return correct results, you've
identified the problem.
Also, what server version, O/S and backend are you using?
What does the entire record look like that you are trying to get?
