Doesn't work for me either, but this does:

ldapsearch -v -x  -b "dc=billy,dc=demon,dc=nl" "(cn=t*)"

It finds all the "t*"s.

There are many variants on this, depending on what you put as filter in
/etc/ldap.conf.

I use "(&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=evy))" or whatever I'm looking
for as standard.

It has nothing to do with whether you use slapadd or not. Your ldif
looks fine, to me.
