LDAP entry mtimes?

Howdy!  I sent this email once, but maybe too soon after I joined the list;
I never saw it.  Please forgive me if it's a duplicate!

I've been looking through the various APIs of LDAP for Perl and C.

For my application, I'd like to be able to get the last modification time of
an LDAP entry.  It's beginning to look like this feature isn't built into
LDAP, but I'd like to ask the experts before I go through a lot of trouble
to add it myself as an attribute each time I modify an entry.
