Problem with ldap_search????

Hi all,
               I am using asynchronous mode for searching through a directory.
When I use ldap_search for doing this, I get Protocol Error. What does this
mean.
For the same basedn and search filter, if ldap_search_s is used, I don't get any
error.

What is the problem.

the lines of code for these is as follows.

if ((rc =ldap_search(ld, "subs-id=90000,dc=ssdb",LDAP_SCOPE_BASE,"(objectclass=*
)",NULL, 0)) != LDAP_SUCCESS)

For asynchronous operation.

for synchronous I used::

if ((rc =ldap_search_s(ld, "subs-id=90000,dc=ssdb",LDAP_SCOPE_BASE,"(objectclass
=*)",NULL, 0,&rec)) != LDAP_SUCCESS)

It worked fine.

What can be the problem.
