Database backup with LDAP.

Hi all,
               I have a LDAP server running with around 1 million entries. Now I
want to add some more attributes to an
ObjectClass in the schema. How can I acheive this while keeping up LDAP server.
Will old database files be usable after
such a change, if attribute to be added is a must attribute.

Can someone provide detailed description of how to do this?
I am in a great need.
